Games Industry Mentor Your foot, our door.

Episode 22: Layoffs

Hey everyone! I'm back after a bit of a hiatus to discus somewhat of a sensitive topic: Layoffs. As some of you may know, I was recently affected by a layoff myself back in June. Initially I wanted to do an episode while in the thick of it, but that never really happened. Shortly after landing at Red 5 Studios a coworker who listens to the podcast, (and an audio professional!) helped me get it going again! So here it is, the episode about Layoffs. Guests this episode are all coworkers of mine at Red 5: World Artist, Zach Turner; Game Designer, Scott Rudi; and Audio Designer, Daniel Beck.

  1. Awesome! sense your working at a new studio with new people. maybe, you can redo some of the art related topics?

  2. It’s great to see the podcast is back up and running it’s diffidently . Also I second RJ’s comment about redoing previous topics with new guests.

  3. Great that you’re making podcasts again, looking forward to future shows.

  4. welcome back, and another great informative episode…you should plug the facebook page in the next podcast.

  5. Welcome back, been missing this great show! Personal and down to earth. Maybe you could do some episodes that go even more in depth about the different positions in the industry? Discussions between a couple of professional game designers, programmers etc. for instance? Discuss tools, common mistakes, sources of inspiration and knowledge.

Thanks again for this great show Aaron, hope you are doing well at your new job!

  6. Hey guys, great episode. These really have been useful and helps me get through my day. I know some of this stuff was personal this time but man, we all really get to those low points sometimes huh? Thanks for the share!

  7. I’m new to the game industry myself. One of the first things I noticed is that the “culture” studios speak of is a lot like the kind of culture you find in high school, a very cliqueky …and there is a degree of butt kissing. Like they said in this episode, if you’re generally a nice person (not genuinely, anyone can act nice) you’re more likely to get a job.

  8. I found this podcast and this website to be an amazing source of information.
Thanks a lot for putting the time and effort to do this.

  9. Hey Aaron, great podcast. It’s nice to get different perspectives on layoffs and how other people in the industry deal with them, very encouraging stuff for someone who is currently in between projects. I think another topic that might be podcast worthy is how best to approach negotiating contracts. Contract gigs seem to be the norm nowadays, but it is also very easy to get the raw end of the deal if you don’t know what to look for before signing anything. Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing more.
