Hiatus

So I've been neglecting writing this post because frankly, it really bums me out. So I apologize for not keeping everyone in the loop sooner.

I have been running into difficulties completing the podcasts due to a handful of reasons, not the least of those being a broken laptop, a baby on the way, and work. I'm not sure when I will be able to replace my laptop, but that seems to be the biggest hurdle for me right now. So I regret to inform listeners that I will be going into a bit of a hiatus.

I want to make it clear that I always expected this hiatus would come sooner or later once we started running out of developer jobs to talk about, or covered enough topics. I anticipated Games Industry Mentor would simply fall under a type of "standby" status, awaiting enough suggestions for another topic, and update out of date information as the industry matures. Unfortunately all of this is just happening a bit sooner than I would like, as there were a couple more topics I would like to have covered.

Like many of you, I am an avid podcast listener - and nothing frustrates me more than a podcast I love falling into a seldom published schedule, so I apologize for that as well. I hope you realize that it's not due to a lack of interest in the podcast, I have always felt passionate about helping people find advice on how to break into this industry - and that hasn't changed. I eagerly look forward to covering new topics and finding the time and resources to produce more episodes when appropriate. Hopefully that knowledge is some consolation while waiting for episodes, or for your topic to be covered.

Please keep writing in with your suggestions, and thanks for all the support!!

- Aaron

  1. This has been a great resource so far and I think I can speak for everyone in saying I am so happy you started it in the first place. I look forward to its return at some point and hope everything goes well for you :)

One episode I would like to see when it comes back is level design.

  2. I agree with Mat, I’ve listend to every podcast you have posted so far and a few of them I’v listend to more than once!

I really hope your able to return some point soon!

  3. +1 more!
The podcasts so far have been really amazing, they have really helped me understand the industry more and have found a lot of new things that I wouldn’t have otherwise.
We look forward to the next ones! Good luck with the kid!

  4. Hi Aaron! I haven’t contacted you in a while, but I still listen to your podcast. Thanks for your advice a while back. I’ve been working to broaden my style. I was wondering if you could do a more in depth podcast on networking and what to do in awkward situations. This would benefit everyone trying to break into the industry, and not just people looking to get into a specific job. I have lots of questions about what to do in awkward situations. Waiting at the airport after GDC. Recovering from a major Faux Pas. What absolutely not to do, and how you can recover if you actually do it.

  5. Oh man, you cant do that to us :( No, seriously, I loved every single episode, its hepled me a lot. I actually am very very close to getting an Intership at a Games Company (I think) and your Podcast on Portfolios helped me a great deal achieving this.
As for Topics you can Cover: Job Interview is really the one thats missing I think.

I wish you great luck for your future and with the baby :)

  6. nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

  7. Well it is sad to see any podcast go on hiatus and especially when it’s one of you favorites. Thanks for all the podcasts so far and I look forward to seeing the return of GIM soon. All the best to you and good luck! 😀

  8. Perhaps a show with indie developers? Showing either ways to parlay the experience into a gig? Maybe something discussing the current crop of guys who’ve left studios or have pro experience and are trying their hand at the indie scene? People on the outside (software devs, etc) trying to use it as well? The artist angle working with the simpler game dev tools that’re out there?

Just some ideas, but I thank you for all your work here and wish you the best with yer little one on the way!

  9. thanks for the work so far! good luck with the baby

  10. How about something on indie game creation? I’m surprised you haven’t done that yet, what with the cryengine 2 sandbox editor, the UDK, the GECK etc. And the booming Indie game moment over the last couple of years

  11. you should be proud for what you have accomplished. Many thanks for all the effort that went into these podcasts.

  12. Maybe look into getting a co-host that would be willing and able to cover for you when you’re out? I know it’s easier said than done, but just saying in case you haven’t given it much thought yet.

Anyway, thanks for the great work so far! We’ll be here when ever you come back from real life!

  13. Thanks for all the great info, I’m sure there’s more that can be covered but already you put together some great resources for people. Like Mallory said we’ll be here when you get back =)

  14. Like many, I will miss your ‘cast. There have been many insightful episodes. I wish I could help you financially, but student and all that. Good Luck with your new baby and life in general, you will be missed. Come back soon!

  15. Oh yeah, congrats on the baby!

  16. Love the podcasts, you’ve opened my eyes and my mind. Thank you and look forward to your next podcast. Good luck with the new addition.

  17. I still listen to the character artist and portfolios episodes about once every week while at work just to keep me motivated to work hard on my portfolio. Big thanks, Aaron.

  18. Thank you for the work you’ve done so far with game industry mentor!
    Good luck with everything!

As a new technical artist within the industries i’ve listen to all of your podcast, and they’ve been great!

  19. I have a few ideas for topics: Public Relations/Marketing, QA, Localizing.

I also think it would awesome to actually hear what a director of a game does. Specific roles to that field and what kind of say does he have really (vs. head of company vs. financial backers).

  20. I hope your GREAT Podcast will come BACK. PLEASE!!!

  21. Thank you for the Podcasts, these have been the best source of information by far that I have been able to find. I would also like to hear a Podcast about Level Design/Game Designer… I have been designing table top games like Dungeons and Dragons for many many years, since the early 80s. I am wondering through that experience how it translates into the game industry and what knowledge is needed to make it a successful transition?

  22. These podcasts are great since I’m in college now to become programmer this gives me great insight into what the industry is and what the people in the industry are like, keep up the good work.
